The Smart Conversion is powered by two LMC200D127 Permanent Magnet Motors Supplied by LMC Ltd based in Devon, together with the Alltrax Controller, the incredible power but small size and weight is attributable to the excellent original design and the use of neodymium magnets, these magnets, based on rare earth element are more powerful than conventional ferrite magnets, and can therefore provide much more torque. The Motors are 10" in diameter and weigh just 11kg each, the use of a bakelite brush holder enables the motor to run at a much higher temperature, to control the power we use Alltrax controllers, these controllers are very flexible and can be interfaced with a laptop computer allowing operating parameters to be re-configured on the fly with a very intuitive Windows application. Together with the manufacturer of the Lynch Motor we are in an unrivalled position having developed a conversion kit for converting a fossil based car to Electric which is exactly what has been done to this popular well loved microcar. The Smart EV Eco conversion by Wattcar is smooth and quite with the driving experience being no way compromised by the conversion. Unlike many electric car conversions, there is little discernable noise from the transmission. This is due to the direct reduction drive from the two Lynch motors, one on to each rear wheel. A two speed selector switches the motors from series to parallel operation. Driving with the motors in series gives an economical lower speed drive most suited to town use while switching parallel gives a higher power from the drive more suitable to the open road. Unlike some conversions, this leaves the interior just as it would be in the petrol version with just as much room for luggage as normal thanks to the Odessey lead acid batteries being carefully mounted underneath the floor of the Smart EV Eco conversion.
